The Act authorizes a wide array of service programs through a network of State Units on Aging, 655 Area Agencies on Aging, 244 Tribal organizations, and 2 Native Hawaiian organizations. The Orange County Office on Aging provides information, assistance, and referrals to community resources/services available for seniors, persons with disabilities, families, caregivers, and veterans within the County of Orange. OC ACCESS is a shared-ride service that is available to qualified participants whose physical or cognitive limitations prevent them from using the regular OC Bus fixed-route service.

She was overwhelmed with emotion, concerned about the financial impact of an earlier than expected retirement, discouraged by the lack of treatment options, and confused about what her next steps should be.

Reports indicate a suspected tornado also touched down early Friday in north Texas, damaging homes and downing trees and power lines. More than half a dozen emergency shelters have been set up throughout Mississippi after the twister ripped through homes and businesses. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency met on Saturday morning to get more information about the overnight storms and plan how to tackle the devastation. Authorities warned those in its path to brace for a ‘life threatening situation’ and on Saturday morning deployed search-and-rescue teams to several counties in the region. Shelters were opened in Mississippi for people forced from their homes by the tornadoes in Sharkey, Monroe and Humphreys counties. A spokesperson for the Morgan County emergency department confirmed the death and told the outlet it was unclear whether one powerful tornado or two separate storms devastated the area.

Jean’s daughter lives locally and is able to take her to medical appointments, but works full-time and is limited during the day. Jean is certain her daughter and neighbors will be able to take her to all necessary appointments and weekly shopping, but does not want to burden anyone with any additional activities.

Senior Connections also provides events and information dissemination that links seniors with each other and their community. The quarterly Senior Newsletter and monthly e-blasts provide timely information to seniors on issues that affect them and share relevant local events, services, and programs. Some of the events provided by this program include the annual Senior Summit, which provides a space for seniors to connect, share and learn about available resources, and the Age Well, Live Well series, seminars on health and aging provided by local experts. We are not providing weekly activities at each senior nutrition site at this time, but plan to in the future.

These ADRCs function as a single, coordinated system for information and access to services for all Floridians seeking long-term care resources. The ADRCs provide information and assistance about state and federal benefits, as well as available local programs and services.
However, addressing social determinants of health can have a positive impact and improve the health status of our older adults. The Information & Assistance (I&A) helpline is a program of Contra Costa County’s Employment & Human Services Department. Seniors, adults with disabilities, and caregivers may call I&A to speak with knowledgeable social workers to get information, referrals to other services, and assistance with solving problems. This service is provided to residents in both Inyo and Mono counties by Inyo County through the ESAAA program. This service is available to seniors and caregivers, who can remain anonymous and can refuse further follow-up.

Jean is aware that there are transportation services available, but does not know what she will be able to afford. The OCSPA Healthcare Subcommittee partnered with organizations such as the Office on Aging and Health Services Advisory Group to promote and offer evidence based chronic disease self-management workshops to older adults throughout the County. Classes were offered in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, and Mandarin. Through this partnership, over 900 seniors completed the workshop series during the period July 2017-December 2018.
Over 60 entities including non-profits, community organizations, academic institutions and county agencies have come together to collaborate on this project. In March 2018, The Orange County Referral Guide for Older Roadway Users was released. It contains resources to assist older drivers and their family members with questions and concerns related to safe driving, as well as transportation alternatives. Knowledge of, and the ability to navigate, existing programs is lacking among older adults, their families and caregivers.
Authorities said six young adults were inside the vehicle, however only four escaped. The tornado has left a trail of destruction and storm debris at least 100 miles long, and is reportedly already battering Alabama. Over 30 million people were under a tornado warning through the evening, and were being warned to brace for the killer storms which brought golf ball-sized hail. Volunteer Mississippi, a state volunteer commission, asked people to check on their neighbors but not to go out looking to help until emergency responders were done with their work.
